Antoinette Johnson Matthews was born in DeKalb County, Georgia, on September 1, 1894, to Daniel and Willie Johnson. She was married to William Collins Matthews of Atlanta, Georgia, on June 17, 1925. Her grandfather was John Gerdine Johnson (1817-1883) who owned most of the land where the Druid Hills neighborhood is now situated.
